Bahar Gökhan and Doğan Akın to perform at cancer charity fundraiser next Sunday

The UK Cancer Benevolent Association (İngiltere Kanser Hastalarına Yardım Derneği) is holding its annual fundraising ball next Sunday. The charitable group was set up to give support to British Turks undergoing cancer treatment.

Singer Bahar Gökhan, the rising star of Turkish classical music, is jetting in from Cyprus for the concert. Also on the line-up is popular London singer and TV presenter Doğan Akın, whose broad repertoire encompasses Arabesk, Pop and Folk music, supported by his fantastic Grup N-JOY. Dance troupe POPCORN add to the evening’s entertainment with their eye-catching Salsa and Tango performances.

Funds raised by the UK Cancer Benevolent Association (UKCBA) in 2015 enabled the group to visit cancer patients at home and accompany those in need to hospital for treatment. The group’s chairwoman, Ayla Derya is herself a cancer survivor and knows first-hand how tough the battle can be especially for those who cannot speak good English nor have any family support to fall back on.

Mrs Derya called for community groups, businesses and individuals to help support their vital outreach work. She said, “We hope you will all join us for our fundraising gala ball next Sunday, 9th October, where the Turkish ambassador, His Excellency Abdurrahman Bilgiç, will be our special guest. Your support will help us to build a better foundation to support cancer patients in the community.”

UKCBA held their first charity ball last year, which was attended by the TRNC First Lady Meral Akıncı. The significant funds raised helped them to not only support Turkish speaking cancer patients in the UK, but also make a £2,000 donation to the Children’s Cancer Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The group also has extensive ties with other UK cancer charities, sharing their information on treatment and other available support with community members. And earlier this year, UKCBA members joined their colleagues in North Cyprus for a fundraising walk, helping to raise £3,000 for cancer suffers in the TRNC.
