One of Turkey’s biggest music stars will make his London debut next month. Teoman and his band will be live at the Forum in Kentish Town on Sunday 16 October.
The 48-year-old singer-songwriter first came to prominence with his 1998 breakthrough album O, containing numerous hits including Sus Konuşma and Kardelen. It remained in the top 10 for two years and established Teoman as one of the stars of a new generation of indie-fuelled Turkish rock.
His follow-up album 17 (2000) proved he was no flash in the pan, but a sincere spokesman for his generation. His catchy lyrics and guitar-led music with lashings of electronic beats attracted rockheads and Turkish pop fans alike, propelling him to the forefront of urban popular culture.
Teoman’s popularity was aided by his live gigs. A decade before hitting the big time and for years after he found fame, the singer regularly performed in Istanbul’s coolest rock bars, forging a loyal fan base. His stage mates included Şebnem Ferah and Özlem Tekin, who similarly flourished in the nineties, and also featured on Teoman’s early albums.
Adding film work and acting to his repertoire, Teoman took a 16-month hiatus from music in 2011. Since returning he has recorded his tenth studio album, Eski Bir Rüya Uğruna (2015), which sits alongside three compilation, three soundtrack and six remix albums, collectively showcasing the solo artist as he seamlessly criss-crosses genres and moods.
