London’s 1Eid Festival – the perfect way to spend Kurban Bayramı

This year, Eid al-Adha, known as Kurban Bayramı in Turkish, starts on Sunday 11 August and concludes on Wednesday 14 August.

The second of two major Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide, Eid al-Adha honours the willingness of the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham for Jews) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command.

For those living in Muslim majority countries, this four-day public holiday is a time to spend with family and friends, and to eat, have fun and be happy.

Here in the UK, Eid (which means “to feast”, “festival”, and “holiday”) events have been a bit haphazard, but over the past decade, more professionally organised community events have been springing up around the country, including 1Eid.

Launched in 2007, 1Eid at Goodmayes Park in Ilford has turned into a three-day festival that’s fun for all the family. There is a funfair and beach, animals (from donkey rides to birds of prey), a bazaar, international street food, and fireworks.

For those in West London, the same event organisers are this year arunning a parallel event at Norwood Green Park. Admission to both events is free and open to all, including non-Muslims.
