12 of the world’s 100 most influential Twitter accounts of 2022 were from Turkiye

More than one in ten of the world’s top 100 most influential Twitter accounts last year were in Turkiye, according to Notus, which measures Twitter accounts according to their reach and engagement.

The digital marketing company released its annual rankings for 2022 last month, which included 12 Twitter accounts from Turkiye.

The two best ranked Turkish Twitter accounts for influence were Babala TV, an online current affairs platform led by musician-cum political commentator Oğuzhan Uğur, and rock star turned philanthropist Haluk Levent, who were in eighth and sixteenth positions respectively.

Interestingly, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan only ranked 87, making him the seventh highest ranked Turkish account on the most influential Twitter list for last year.

Other Turkish accounts to rank above the Turkish President for influence in 2022 were 23 Derece (newspaper), Solcu (newspaper), Babala TV founder Oğuzhan Uğur’s personal Twitter account, and Turkiye presidential candidate Muharrem İnce.

Elon Musk topped the 2022 rankings with his social capital measuring 3.1 billion on Twitter, followed by a Brazilian entertainment and celebrity social media account Choqei on 2.6 b, according to Notus.

The Twitter influencer list is compiled by American tech start-up Notus, whose software analyses the levels of interaction of individual Twitter accounts to create its ‘most influential’ rankings. The algorithms review the number of likes, retweets, mentions, and replies for each account. This, and not the number of followers, is what gives an account its social capital and determines its overall ranking position.

Notus’s algorithms have highlighted that even some of Twitter’s smaller accounts with less than a million followers can punch far above their weight with influence because of their considerably higher levels of interactions on the platform.
