London’s Turkish football community will come together this Sunday for the traditional season-opening Community Shield, which this year will be played in memory of the late Turkish Cypriot businessman Münir Tatar.
Organised by the Turkish Community Football Federation (TCFF), the match will see reigning League champions Galatasaray London take on Federation Cup winners Mehmetçik London at New River Sports Centre in Wood Green on Sunday, 20 September.
The fixture marks the official opening of the new Turkish community football season, but this year’s occasion will carry added poignancy following the recent death of Münir Tatar, a highly respected and much-loved figure who made significant contributions to the Turkish Cypriot community over many years.
A minute’s silence will be observed at 4.15pm in Mr Tatar’s memory, ahead of the 4.30pm kick-off.
Following what promises to be a competitive encounter between two of the Turkish Community Football League’s leading sides, the afternoon will conclude with the Community Shield trophy presentation and speeches from invited dignitaries and federation officials.
The TCFF is encouraging members of the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot communities to attend both to support the teams and to pay tribute to Münir Tatar.
“We warmly invite our entire community to join us for this special occasion as we come together to honour Münir Tatar’s memory and mark the opening of the new football season,” the Federation said.
