North Cyprus’ Karpaz Gate Marina recognised for innovation at Sustainable Smart Marina Awards

Karpaz Gate Marina has won a prestigious Marina Award for Innovation at this year’s Monaco Sustainable & Smart Marina Rendezvous. Now in its third year, the awards “celebrate the exceptional achievements in the marina industry based on sustainability, technological innovation, and community building.”

The exclusive event, attended by some 250 people, took place at the Monaco Yacht Club at the end of September. Guests included marina owners, developers, architects, entrepreneurs, industrialists, and investors, who are all keen to adopt  innovative solutions.

The Innovation category was for marinas with “a strong vision that…can lead the way towards urban development that is more respectful of the environment, being aligned and in harmony with the Ocean so close by.” An international jury chose the winner.

Liza Singer, the managing director of Karpaz Gate Marina, collected the award for the harbour, which can cater for up to 300 yachts and superyachts. Posting about their win on social media, the company said:

About Karpaz Gate Marina

Nestled in the Karpaz Peninusla, in the northeast of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, Karpaz Gate Marina has shown an unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation since its inauguration in 2011, including reducing its environmental footprint.

It was awarded five gold anchor status in 2013 for its high standards, which it has maintained as the site expanded to include a 52 cabin nautically themed boutique hotel and spa facilities. Guests are offered a truly immersive experience within this natural marine and countryside setting being surrounding by unspoilt landscape of North Cyprus.

Being situated in a part of Cyprus that is renowned for its natural beauty and unspoilt beaches, the British-based investment owners of Karpaz Gate Marina were keen to create a fully operational marina that was respectful of its natural environment and also fully sustainable. The area is home to many inland and marine species, including sea turtles, and the tip of the peninsula is a protected natural heritage area.

The marina’s eco-friendly approach to development in what was then a remote part of the island has included becoming self-sufficient in its production of energy. Services such as electricity, water, sewage and waste all had to be specially developed for the location, which allowed Karpaz Gate Marina to play a key role in the development of the area as a whole.

The company has also had to nurture strong community relations, which it has sustained by offering locals employment and training, and using local suppliers where possible, and also donating financial support into sports and education for young Turkish Cypriots.
