From cancer awareness to combating hate crimes, important free events at the TCCA

The Turkish Cypriot Community Association in Harringay, North London, continues to be a vital hub for community matters and support. The organisation will be hosting a series of free events that are open to all.

EVENT 1: Hate Crime Awareness Week discussion with police

Thursday 18 October 2018, 11am-11.30am, English and Turkish

The first focuses on hate crime awareness. With a significant spike in both race and religious hate incidents across Britain, local police are taking a pro-active step to help raise awareness of the issue and to deal with any concerns the local community may have.

Haringey Community Safety Unit and Detective Inspector David Hannaway of the Metropolitan Police will be visiting the TCCA this Thursday, for a short session between 11 and 11.30am. If you are in the area, feel free to drop in for a coffee and a chat. They are happy to field questions in English or Turkish too.

EVENT 2: Kanser Farkındalık Konferansı with Dr.Teoman Sırrı MBE

Sunday 21 October 2018, midday to 3.30pm, Turkish only

With Stand Up For Cancer and other cancer awareness events taking place this month, it’s also a good time for British Turks to turn the spotlight on this dreaded and often fatal disease.

Most of us have been personally touched by cancer, either as a survivor, or as a relative or friend to someone who has had cancer. It’s predicted that up to half of us will get cancer at some point in our lives. Although cancer is prevalent across all parts of British society, many questions remain about it.

Dr. Teoman Sırrı (pictured above) is one of the British Turkish community’s best known doctors and on Sunday afternoon, he will be presenting a seminar in Turkish on cancer. He will explain what the disease is, the common causes and how it is currently being combatted. Dr. Sırrı will also answer questions about cancer and treatments on offer.

EVENT 3: drop-in free advice surgery

Every Thursday, 9am to 11.30am, Turkish and English

Many people struggle to know where to go for free advice and often a simple bit of sign-posting can be of huge help. It could be a health or housing matter, or perhaps consumer or employment rights.

Turgay Bey (no information was supplied to T-VINE about his credentials) is hosting a weekly advice surgery to assist the community. No appointment is needed, everyone is seen on a first come, first served basis.

Address for all events is the Turkish Cypriot Community Association (TCCA), 628-630 Green Lanes, Harringay, London N8 0SD.
