Photojournalism from around the world: see the winners of Istanbul Photo Awards 2023 in London exhibition

Now in its nineth year, the Anadolu Agency’s Istanbul Photo Awards is an annual celebration of international photographers whose incredible images capture vivid and often hard-hitting stories about global people and events.

This year’s winning images are being toured around the world with London the next stop. The Yunus Emre Institute will be hosting the Istanbul Photo Awards 2023 exhibition featuring works by 29 photographers.

Visitors to the London exhibition will have the opportunity to explore photographs depicting the Ukraine-Russia War, the Qatar World Cup, life under the oppressive Taliban regime, child trafficking in Nigeria, and lithium-induced environmental changes to the natural world in Thailand.

Given the current events in Gaza, the exhibition includes award-winning photographs of Palestine from previous years through to 2023.

Serdar Karagöz, the Director General of Anadolu Agency, will be hosting the opening evening on 5 December and the exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will run for ten days.

This year the competition, which is supported by Nikon, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), and Turkish Airlines, received over 21,000 photo submissions in ten categories including news, sports, environment, portrait, and daily life.

The international jury awarded Photograph of the Year 2023 to Sergey Kozlov, a photographer from the European Pressphoto Agency (EPA), for his work titled “Ukraine-Russia War.”

Nominations are now open to professional photographers for the 2024 Istanbul Photo Awards, which will select images that have shaped this year’s global agenda.

Applications can be made until 17 January 2024. For more information about the competition, past years’ winning photographs, and to make an application please visit istanbulphotoawards.com
